We need to ban TIP CUPS

I’m really blinded by the rage with these stupid f#ckin tip cups popping up all over the place. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE and there is no stopping them.

Picture this. You are at Krishna Donuts on Oak Tree Road in Edison, you order a Boston Cream and a bottle of water. Krishna himself is serving you and the bill rings up to $2.20 USD. You hand Krishna $3 and the change comes back. Now there is 80 cents left and Krishna is looking for a piece of it. So much he actually taps the tip cup to give you a bit of encouragement. WHY WOULD I TIP YOU. You have done next to nothing and yet a tip is required. At least if I ordered coffee with cream and sugar, and you had to stir it, there might be some entitlement, but not in my donut parlor!

Things are going to far. Ice cream parlors have “College Fund” tip cups. Cute little girls serve ice cream and jingle the cup. Yeah, I’m really glad I had a part in little Betsy paying for Yale. Airport snack bars, pizza shops, sandwhich shops, convenience stores, Ethiopian restaurants, hungarian restuarants, Epcot center.  I sh#t you not, I was at a Dutch market the other day and the Amish had a tip cup up at the pretzel stand.  “Save the Oxen” fund was written on it.

Some time back a co-worker of mine went to a donut shop, an established place, and it could have been Krishna’s cousin working the counter. She too ordered a non complicated meal, and the change coming back to her was 20 cents. She held her hand out, and K’s cousin passed right by it and dumped the 20 cents in the tip cup. He didn’t even ask her. She went nuts of course. She actually dug her hand in the cup and took it out. K’s cousin was pissed.

Anyway I can rant on this forever. I am calling a protest for anyone who will listen. Next time you see a tip cup, make sure you don’t tip. Owners are using tip cups to subsidize their employees’ pay. Cheap bastards. If you don’t want change, put it in the “starving children’s” tin or “Lost Dog Fund” tin.

Wow, don’t you live such a HORRIBLE life! Everywhere you go you are being tortured by those fiendish TIP CUPS! Do you even read what you write before you post it? You sound like a sniveling child. Tip or don’t tip, its very simple, there is no reason why you should be bitching about it.

PS - Kia, you wont see a tip cup @ McD’s cause its against their company policy. Too bad cause they’re probably the people that need/deserve it the most…

Read with your eyes not your mouth G. If you read the article fully, you would see that I mention my discontent was due to people pressuring to tip or taking liberties: The guy banging the tip cup and also the guy just taking the change and automatically throwing it in the change into the tip cup without getting consent.

I do agree, you are right we don’t have to tip, but being pressured is just wrong.

  4. Kia Says:

Well I’m glad there won’t be a TIP CUP!!
At McDonald!! You have to be kidding me Gregg!! Tip @ a restaurant fine! At a DAMN DONUT Shop!!! You have to be kidding me, should I then tip the mail room staff, oh! I should then tip the doctor when he gives me a good report!! Tip the receptionist who offers me a glass of water while I wait! PLEASE!! DOWN WITH THE DAMN TIP CUPS EVERYWHERE!! I even see them in the Sandwich chain “SUBWAY” I thought the whole point was to make my sandwich there, I didn’t know asking me what I want on my sandwich was “a little something special”

I started out doing food and retail entry-level jobs. I’ve also done lots of other TRULY intensive jobs…like janitorial, general labor, construction labor, concrete work, brick laying, tile setting, etc. Looking back, the counter work was easier…NOT easy…dealing with customers in NEVER easy…but easier. Now, I’m sure you don’t care about my work history AND I SURE AS HELL don’t care about yours either…but I do have a good understanding of this subject.

I’M TIRED OF THESE SNIVELING TURDS HAVING A TIP CUP ON THE COUNTER FOR A DO-NOTHING, ACT-LIKE-YOU’RE-DOING-THE- CUSTOMER-A-FAVOR JOB! If they need a tip just to bring a customer a coffee and a donut, they will never be able to make it in a real job. Why tip some useless, unmotivated, slacker life loser! These kinds of jobs ARE NOT MEANT TO BE CAREERS! They are entry-level jobs, meant to be used as a stepping-stone to better job! That’s way it’s been done for decades. Welcome to capitalism!

TIP stands for “to insure promptness”. It was intended to be optional (as Gregg said) AND dependent upon the quality of service. I understand that tipping has become a way for employers to justify paying a lower than minimum wage. However, it has also become a way for employees to coerce or pressure a customer into supplementing their wages. Not only that but counter work ISN”T WORTH MORE THAN MINIMUM WAGE…AND IF YOU DON”T LIKE THAT MOVE ON TO A BETTER JOB!!! In this case…why the hell would a tip be needed anyway? Walking three feet to Grab a friggin’ donut and pour a cup of coffee? Listen I’ll save you the walk…let me get my own donut and pour my own coffee. Same damn thing in sandwich shop. What the hell is there to tip for? …slappin’ some turkey on a damn roll?

I having nothing but respect for waiters and waitresses, cooks, etc…THEY EARN THEIR TIP!

Don’t counter people have such a HORRIBLE life! …get a real job if you don’t like it!
